Fitness guru Richard Simmons retreated from the public eye in 2014 and a documentary alleges it was down to a birth defect that was unknown to the world.
Bedazzled low-cut vests, hot pants, and frizzy hair were the look of the 1980s and 90s thanks to Richard Simmons, the man who dominated aerobics videos. His enthusiastic demeanor and inclusive Sweatin’ To The Oldies workouts resonated with Americans who had long been intimated by hardcore gym-goers. But the celebrity‘s abrupt departure from the spotlight concerned fans worldwide, with rumors falsely alleging he was held hostage by his housekeeper and undergoing procedures for his transition.

Richard Simmons disappeared from the public eye due to a ‘leg birth defect’
From 1980 onward, the eccentric entertainer became a fixture on daytime and late-night talk shows, going from a flamboyant aerobics instructor to becoming one of the most beloved celebrities in the country.
Simmons, 75, gradually minimized his public appearance in the 2000s but continued to lead weekly workout classes at his famous Beverly Hills studio, Simmons – until 2014, that is. The celebrity health fitness guru was last photographed in January that same year, prompting wild theories of his whereabouts.
Speculation that his housekeeper was holding him hostage or he transitioned into a woman named Fiona were guesses that surfaced. Even a podcast named Missing Richard Simmons was launched in investigation. The TV star resurfaced in 2016 to refute claims his housekeeper was holding him hostage.
The documentary TMZ Investigates: What Really Happened to Richard Simmons allegedly explains why the beloved star faded from public view. According to the special, which aired on Fox, Simmons’ retreat came down to a leg injury stemming from a birth defect.
TMZ editor Fabian Garcia told viewers Simmons was “born without a full set of bones in his foot,” as per News.com.au. The 80s star reportedly gained weight, thus straining his legs. TMZ also reported about his knee complications in 2014, claiming he underwent an operation on his right knee and delayed replacing his left knee due to the pain.
Simmons confirmed he had “a tough time dealing with this injury” without specifying the exact condition, but he was presumed to be addressing the knee speculation.
Where Richard Simmons is now
Richard Simmons published a rare Facebook update on January 17, 2024, to denounce the upcoming biopic starring Pauly Shore, shortly after the reveal.
He claims he did not give permission for the film and no longer has a publicist or manager.
“I just try to live a quiet life and be peaceful. Thank you for all your love and support,” he wrote.
The post comes months after a representative assured to ET the star was “happy” on his 75th milestone birthday. They said he was choosing to live the life he wants to live, out of the spotlight.
